History of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Twenty-two undergraduate women founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University. These intelligent and courageous young women wanted to use their collective strength  to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to persons in need.

Delta Sigma Theta is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to promote human welfare.  We are a sisterhood of college educated women committed to public service. As the legacy continues, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has progressed into an elite organization that continuously strives to uphold the principles and values that our Illustrious Founders believed in.

The Grand Chapter of  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a membership of over 200,000 college educated women. Although Delta Sigma Theta is a historically black sorority, membership is open to all who are committed to the goals of the organization.  The sorority currently has 900-plus chapters located in  the United States, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Korea, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Nu Beta History

The Nu Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on the campus of Mississippi State University on April 14, 1976. Nu Beta was the first black Greek sorority to be chartered at Mississippi State. The procedures for the implementation of the chapter were initiated by Soror Amelia Adams, Soror Hester Watts Buie, Soror Pearlie Perkins, and Soror Pauline Pearson Stamps. Because of their determination and dedication to Delta we have been a chapter of college women with the courage to lead.

Today we continue to serve our community as well as the campus of Mississippi State. We conduct programs under our sorority's Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and involvement. The Nu Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta continues to set standards for academic excellence as well as lead and assist students and people in the community.
